Race, Ethnicity and Expression

  • ASAH-EUR 3 Rijnhoutplein Rotterdam, ZH, 3014 TZ Netherlands (map)

You may have heard of the Sinterklaas festivities that take place in The Netherlands every year, and the controversies that are brought up by the continued use of blackface during this period. To open up a broader conversation, we are organizing an interactive evening with professionals in the field of institutionalized racism and public administration in Rotterdam.

The mini lectures will be hosted by Michantely de Jong and Dr. Bonnie French. De Jong works as a municipality councilor for the BIJ1 party, known for its strong campaigning against racism. French is an assistant professor in sociology at ESSB, focusing her research on race and racism in institutions and more generally social inequality. Afterward, they will be joined by Jacqueline Onyenze and Mumbi Gachara for a panel discussion. Onyenze is the Student Engagement Officer at the University diversity and inclusion office. Working with students, she strives to bring about an open and inclusive environment on campus. Gachara is an engaged student, currently studying econometrics and operations research. She is also a former board member of ASAH and works as a student assistant.

Join us for an informative evening and an opportunity to ask our guests your own questions!
